Skills You Need To Be An Effective Leader At Work

I am not a bad leader; it’s just that, unluckily, I have bad followers.

I am a team leader, so I should have a fancy designation that I can flaunt among my peers.


An impressive sounding title or the negative tactic of blaming others is not how a leader can deliver powerful results. Being a leader at your workplace can be a challenging task. More than acquiring it, leadership is something that needs to be earned. Your team members must readily accept you as their leader. And this can only happen if you are able to make them feel that you’re all in it together.

There are many qualities that a strong leader is associated with, like intelligence, patience, passion, enthusiasm and more. However, here are some skills that are essential to be an effective leader at work -


1. Good communication skills


A prerequisite for  being a good leader is the ability to communicate well and clearly. You should have the ability to explain everything to your team - be it a particular task or the goals of the organization, in a manner that is easily understandable by all.


As a leader, you should be a master of all types of communication, whether it is one on one with an employee, with a department or in some cases, the whole staff. The communication should be equally clear over emails, phone and social media channels.


An important part of communication is to also being a good listener. You should have the ability to listen to and understand the problems or issues faced by the other employees and then come up with solutions. Your team members should be able to approach you for any discerning issue without any hesitation.


Your communication should be strong right from the time you advertise an open position in your company. For example, a proper job description is very important as that is the first point of communication on the basis of which you can get the right type of candidates, the ones that you are really looking for.


2. Delegating jobs wisely


“To do great things is difficult, but to command great things is more difficult.”


You, as a leader, need to learn how to assign responsibilities to others and at the same time, be authoritative enough to get things done. Remember that you must explain the task very clearly to your team members and also mention about the expected results, but it is not a good idea to tell them how exactly should they complete the task.  Leave it to them to find the best way to do it.


When you allow your team to work this way, you are increasing their interest and creativity, while boosting their confidence and self-esteem.


When you assign jobs to other employees, you are actually getting a lot of work done in a less amount of time. Simultaneously, you are helping them develop their work skills and build their confidence. And this is what makes you a good leader.


3. Strategic thinking


A leader should have a vision that will inspire the team and make them go forward. He/She should also have the ability to recognize the long-term goals of the business as well as the individual employees. Therefore, it is important to analyse and strategize each step.


A business is more like a game of chess, where your strategic moves will decide how long you can stay in the game. You can’t afford to stand still, you have to grow continuously. And as a leader, it is your responsibility to plan the growth else the whole organization can suffer.


4. A positive attitude


A positive attitude can take you a long way, and is an important skill if you want to be an effective leader. Staying calm when things don’t go right or cracking a joke during stressful situations, can lighten the moment, thus creating a healthy and happy environment at work.


Simple gestures like talking about a favourite sport with your employees, asking them about their vacations or eating lunch once in a while together, will help to boost the morale of the employees and keep them happy.When employees work in a positive environment, they will be more productive in their work, and will also be willing to work for extra hours if required.


5. Power to motivate


As a leader, it will be your job to inspire and motivate your employees to give their best for the organization. Paying a decent salary is very important, but is not the only way to motivate your employees. Other perks like recognitions and rewards or new responsibilities also work as motivating factors.


You need to know which motivations work best for your employees so that you can encourage passion and productivity in them.


6. Take responsibility for all situations


Someone who is always at the front to take credit for everything that goes well in the organization, but blames it on others when something goes wrong, is definitely not a person who qualifies to be a leader. A leader is always responsible for both success and failure. You should readily take the blame if such a situation arises.


You can lose respect in the eyes of your employees if they see you accusing others for mistakes. Accepting the mistakes and then coming up with a solution is the best way to handle such situations.


7. Be open to feedback


Feedback should be a two-way affair when it comes to effective leadership. As a leader, you should always provide feedback to your team members regarding their performance. It will help them perform better and help them gain confidence. At the same time, your confidence level will also improve as a manager or leader, when you review employees’ performance and help them make the right decisions in order to improve.


If employees have any feedback for you, ensure that you take it willingly. If they have some concerning issues related to office, hear them out and be open to make the required changes. Remember that employees will always appreciate a leader who is open to feedback and is ready to make changes wherever necessary.
